Recap: Money Moves 6 - Show Us The Money 🤑 presented by RBC
On Monday July 8, The Standard welcomed a room full of Black women professionals to RBC WaterPark Place in Toronto for the sixth edition of Money Moves, presented by our partner RBC.
From supporting local Black-woman owned businesses at the marketplace, to seeing and hearing new connections be made in real time, we couldn’t be happier to see attendees leave the event empowered to make fearless money moves, whether climbing the corporate ladder, starting a side hustle, or scaling a business.
What We Learned
An expert panel, led by CityNews reporter Faiza Amin ensured that attendees heard diverse perspectives from Black women making moves in a variety of disciplines, sharing insights on everything from finding funding to salary negotiation, entrepreneurship supports, and alternative funding models like crowdsourcing.
Trust The Process
Krys (Deal) Lunardo - Founder of Dealbodies and Dauphine Magazine
Krys encouraged attendees to ‘trust the process’ and stay consistent when it comes to building a brand as an entrepreneur. She noted that often there is a the temptation to switch things like branding and messaging before they’ve had a chance to gain momentum. Just remember: for everyone who may have seen a certain message, there is a new audience who is eager to be introduced. Don’t be afraid to stick with it!
Know Your Worth…And Ask For It
Janey Buzugbe - Founder of Immuducation
Janey brought out the acronyms to help those looking for tangible tips on how to negotiate their next job offer: ZOPA - the zone of possible agreement, and BATNA - the best alternative to a negotiated offer. The former refers to the zone that exists within the compensation range you are willing to accept, and that which the employer is willing to offer. Make sure to research the salary range for your role to ensure you are receiving the most competitive offer, even if you are sure you will take the job. The BATNA refers to the other aspects of compensation that may contribute to making an offer favourable beyond salary: think remote work options, supplemental benefits, signing bonuses etc.
Any Time is the Right Time
Reeva Goodman - Marketing Manager, RBC Royal Bank
Sometimes we feel as though we’re stuck on a certain path, simply because we’ve started it. But Reeva reminded attendees that it’s always okay to pivot once you have new information: whether it’s a new product or direction for your business, or a new career path based on your skillset that may not be entirely what you envisioned. Always be open to possibility.
