October Member Feature - Meet SHAWNA MORRISON

October 11th was the "International Day of the Girl", and marks the 10th Anniversary of this global awareness day. We caught up with Shawna Morrison - Senior Director, Marketing Operations at MLSE.

CBS: What does the International Day of the Girl mean to you?

SHAWNA:
"Girls around the world continue to face unprecedented challenges. This day is about empowerment, our voice matters and we will no longer allow others to dictate our rights. We decide."

CBS: As we are often the one and only in the room, you have mentioned that it is important as Black women that we boldly hold space. Tell us more about this and why we also have a responsibility to make space for other Black and Brown women.

SHAWNA: "Black women often have to navigate the intertwined barriers at the intersection of race and gender, yet even though we live at that intersection of double jeopardy, we have been able to turn trials into triumphs. Our leadership isn't about strength and perseverance, it's about consistently showing up and fighting for the common good. This strategy relies upon the commonality of community. The importance of mentors and sponsors; a continuum that is not mutually exclusive. Sponsors hold a position of authority and can use their influence intentionally to help others advance, while a mentor provides feedback and coaching. For me, I find purpose in being both, helping to create space and opportunity, while supporting and guiding others along their journey."

CBS: Talk to us about the importance of diversity and intersectionality at the decision making level in the marketing industry and why this makes good business sense.

SHAWNA:
"Diverse perspective leads to better business outcomes through innovation, efficiency and organizational culture, but it is equally important to understand the experience of employees that belong to multiple social groups. When employees feel supported and accepted it leads to better results, as they feel comfortable and safe to express their ideas and share diverse perspectives that drives value."
